A classroom noise meter students can see

This classroom noise meter turns your computer's microphone into a big, friendly sound monitor. Students see a bar and a face that change from green to yellow to red as the volume rises, so they can manage their own voice levels without you raising yours.

Every room is different, so you set the limit. Start it during a normal group work session and move the slider until the usual hum stays green. From then on, the meter shows the class when they cross the line. A gentle beep can sound when it gets too loud, and the meter keeps track of how many seconds the class spent over the limit, which is a nice goal to beat.

Privacy is built in. Sound is measured in your browser, moment by moment, and is never recorded, saved or sent anywhere. Nothing is stored except your limit setting.

Ways to use a noise meter in class

  • Set voice levels together

Practice whisper, partner and group voices with the class watching the meter, and agree where the limit goes.

  • Quiet work challenge

Run the classroom timer and the noise meter together. Can the class finish ten minutes with no red?

  • Earn a reward

Add a star to a class reward chart for every session under the limit.

  • Transitions

Keep the meter up during clean-up so transitions stay calm.

  • Science of sound

Use the meter to compare sounds: a whisper, a clap, a book dropped on the floor.

  • Library and test days

Lower the limit for silent reading or tests.

Frequently asked questions

Does the noise meter record my class?

No. Audio is analyzed live in your browser to measure loudness and is never recorded, stored or uploaded.

Why doesn't the microphone work?

Your browser needs permission. Click Start listening and choose Allow. If you blocked it before, use the lock icon in the address bar to allow the microphone for this site.

How do I set the right limit?

Start the meter during normal group work and move the limit slider until that level stays green. Every room and microphone is different.

Can I show it on the projector?

Yes. Press F for a fullscreen view with a large meter and face.

Does it work on a Chromebook or iPad?

Yes, in any modern browser with a microphone. Some school devices block the microphone; your IT team can allow it.
