How to use the name picker
- 1
Paste your class list, one name per line. Save it under a class name so you can switch between periods.
- 2
Press Pick or the space bar. The name appears big enough to read from the back of the room.
- 3
Keep "Remove picked names" on so every student gets a turn before anyone is called twice.
A random name picker that keeps things fair
This random name picker helps you call on students without anyone feeling singled out. Paste your roster, press the space bar, and a name is chosen at random in front of the whole class. Because the screen does the choosing, students see that it is fair, and quieter students get the same chance to speak as the eager hand-raisers.
By default, picked names are set aside until everyone has had a turn. The history list shows who has already answered, and Reset round puts everyone back in. If you want the chance of the same student twice, turn that option off.
Need a pair or a small team? Pick up to five names at once. For whole-class groups, the group generator is a better fit.
You can save several class lists, which helps if you teach more than one section. Lists stay in this browser only. Student names never leave your computer.
Ways to use a random name picker
No-hands-up questioning
Ask the question, give thinking time, then pick. Everyone has to prepare an answer because anyone might be called.
Classroom jobs
Pick this week's line leader, door holder and board cleaner at the start of Monday. No arguments about whose turn it is.
Reading order
Pick three names at once to set the order for reading aloud or presenting projects.
Exit ticket check
At the end of the lesson, pick two students to share their exit ticket. It gives a quick sample of what the class understood.
Partner talk reporters
After pair discussion, pick one name to report back for their pair. Both partners stay engaged because either might be asked.
Prize draws
Put the names of students who met a goal into a separate list and draw a winner on the projector.
Frequently asked questions
Is the random name picker really random?
Yes. Each pick uses the browser's random number generator and every remaining name has an equal chance. With Remove picked names on, no one is chosen twice until everyone has had a turn.
Are my students' names saved online?
No. Names are stored only in this browser on this device. They are never sent to Bellkit or anyone else. Use Delete list or clear your browser data to remove them.
Can I save lists for different classes?
Yes. Create a list for each class or period and switch between them from the menu. Each list keeps its own names.
How do I show it on the projector?
Press F or the Present button. The picker fills the screen with large text on a dark background. Press Esc to go back.
Can I turn the sound off?
Yes. Use the Sound switch. The setting is remembered for next time.
Does it work on an iPad or phone?
Yes. The picker works in any modern browser. Tap Pick instead of using the space bar.
