A classroom timer the whole room can read

This classroom timer is made for the projector. The digits are huge, the ring around them shows how much time is left at a glance, and the color changes near the end so students know to wrap up without you saying a word. Press F for a fullscreen, high-contrast view that the back row can read.

Start and pause with the space bar, so you can run the timer from across the room with a wireless keyboard or clicker. The timer keeps correct time even if you switch to another tab or window to show slides, because it counts from the clock, not from screen updates.

Choose from three end sounds, a soft bell, a rising chime or a short beep, or mute it for quiet work. Your last time and sound are remembered for next lesson.

Visible timers help with transitions, independent work, and students who find open-ended tasks hard to manage. Seeing the time shrink makes the expectation concrete.

Classroom ideas for a timer

  • Clean-up countdown

Set two minutes for tidying up. Students race the ring instead of waiting for reminders.

  • Think time

Give 30 seconds of silent thinking before anyone answers. A visible timer makes the pause feel intentional.

  • Work sprints

Break long tasks into ten-minute sprints with a short stretch between them. Older students can plan what to finish in each one.

  • Station rotations

Run the same time at every station and rotate at the bell. Groups learn to pace themselves.

  • Quick writes

Five minutes of non-stop writing on a prompt. The end sound tells everyone to put pencils down together.

  • Brain breaks

A three-minute timer keeps a movement break from stretching into ten.

Frequently asked questions

Will the timer keep running if I switch tabs?

Yes. The timer works from the real clock, so it stays accurate when the tab is in the background. The sound still plays at zero as long as the tab is open.

Can I set a custom time?

Yes. Type minutes (7), minutes and seconds (2:30), or hours, minutes and seconds (1:15:00) in the custom box and press Set.

How do I make the timer fullscreen?

Press F or the Present button. The timer fills the screen on a dark, high-contrast background. Press Esc to exit.

Why doesn't the sound play?

Browsers only allow sound after you click or press a key on the page. Starting the timer counts, so the end sound should play. Also check that the sound isn't muted and your device volume is up.

Is this classroom timer free?

Yes, completely free with no signup. Ads appear below the tool, never in fullscreen present mode.
